At about 54 postovulatory days old, the embryo measure 25-27 mm in length, about an inch long. At this stage the external ear is clearly formed, the hands begin to extend beyond the body wall, the fingers of one hand may overlap the fingers of the opposite hand, and thickened eyelids just begin to cover the outer margins of the eye.
