At 57 days after ovulation, the embryo is up to an 1 1/4 inches long. At this stage the eyelids at the margins have fused, the subdivisions of the upper limbs (such as the forearm and hand) and lower limbs are distinct, the forearms appear at or above the level of the shoulders and the external genitalia are well developed, but not always sufficiently to distinguish the embryo's sex.
